Knitting Socks

from: Deb St. George, Publisher, Tapestry-Crochet.com

One of the best arts and a nice activity to spend the leisure period. Most of the people love knitting socks and they do this work as a hobby. It is interesting to learn about knitting socks. Decide first about which sock pattern you prefer and arrange the stitches squarely according to the pattern. This indicates your pattern requires 80 stitches, you have to cast 20 stitches onto every needle.

You will have to take a round about change at center back, amid needles 1 and 4. This position can be located easily by observing where the end thread is from when you cast on at first.

The next process in knitting socks is to work the leg in rounds. Some of the rounds should be in rib pattern. This pattern is suitable to hold the leg closely and in a better way. One can knit a sock completely in rib model if he wants or can change the pattern of his choice.

At first, complete the leg and the length that is required. After completing the leg, start making the heel. You have to work in open rows over the stitches on needles 1 and 4 to make the heel. While making the heel the needles change in round on both the sides. Thus, during this process one knits the stitches from needle 4, then needle 1 and then turns the work on the way back as if he is knitting a scarf.

The first and last two stitches on both tails are repeatedly worked in garter stitch to make a better border to the sock. Use the bumps as a pointer to at the end to count the consequential rows. You may slip the stitches from needles 2 and 3 onto a stitch holder to handle it easily. If you put stoppers or little erasers onto the tails of the knitting needles, then it is easier to handle.

Turning the heel is the next process in making the heel. During turning the heel, you have to organize the stitches on three needles according to the pattern that you are following. You can also check the equation for number of stitches for turning the heel. To make this process easier, imagine that the size of your heel has been divided into three sections.

You are keeping the center portion in one piece, taking one stitch from every side panels systematically, and knitting it jointly with the stitch on the external tail of the center panel. Thus, the sock under the heel includes dipping the outside and keeping the center unchanged.

One should remember that the socks should be fitted inside shoes. They will spend much of time chafing your foot. Therefore, while knitting socks be aware of this thing. Select the fibers cautiously. Wool is better for feet and its natural softness helps the sock hold ones foot in a warm fit.

Fibers that have less elasticity like silk, cotton, soy may stretch out of shape after some time. Thus, knitting socks is an art and one should make sure all these things before starting the process.
