Common Knitting Abbreviations

from: Deb St. George, Publisher, Tapestry-Crochet.com

It would be an easy task to learn the complex art of knitting particularly if you own a complete guide that includes detailed illustrations and examples. On the other hand, you will find that most of the people who are learning the art of knitting have problems with the knitting abbreviations which they find in almost every guide. Finding out how you can knit is one thing but getting to know all the knitting abbreviations is completely another thing. In fact, most people are of the opinion that the knitting abbreviations are more difficult that the work of knitting itself. If you think that these abbreviations are some secret codes then you can not be more wrong. The knitting abbreviations are merely shortened version of the words used in regard to a particular pattern. If you think that only the experienced knitters can know the meaning of these abbreviations then you are mistaken.

Given below are the simple interpretations of the knitting abbreviations which can help you if you are new to knitting:

The term CO simply means cast on. It refers to the number of rows of stitches which you will need to make when you are knitting. The most basic kind of stitches is K or knit. Most of the time, you would be required to garter stitch or knit if you are new to knitting. An opposite of the knitting stitches is the purl stitch or P. Another term which most people use to describe this term is stockinette stitch. The term RS means the front of the material which is used in your knitting work or the ‘right side'. WS refers to ‘wrong side' and it means that you are working on the back portion of the material. There is one more term which you may not come across frequently and I am going to tell you about it anyway. This term is BO and it simply refers to the removal of the needles from your fabric after you have completed working on it.

After reading this, I am sure that you no longer find the knitting abbreviations to be complex. You may become frustrated if you do not know what the knitting abbreviations mean. If you are frustrated then you may decide to forget your knitting project. Interpreting the knitting abbreviations in the right way is very important if you are doing knitting work. The reason is that your understanding of these abbreviations will determine whether or not the final product that you have knitted turns out the way you want.

It takes time to knit and you will need patience if you intend to take up knitting. You will find that knitting has always been in fashion and even is today. Are you searching for a hobby which can be productive? Try out knitting for a change. Knitting is not for women only. Men and children can also try their hands at knitting.
